Providence: An Admission of Guilt

Alistair Begg writes: Up to this point Joseph’s brothers had never acknowledged their guilt. Do you recall their calloused reaction to his cries for help in the pit? They sat down to eat their midday meal, choosing to ignore his pleas for mercy. Now we discover the other side of the story: we saw him; we would not listen; we must give an account.

Sunday Sermon: Not Far From the Kingdom

How close is close enough when it comes to the kingdom of God? In this study from Mark 12:28-34, we learn that knowing true things about God and understanding his law isn't enough. Unless our religion shows us our need for God, it will actually keep us from him.

2011 Annual Report Booklet

The holiday season seems an appropriate time to remind ourselves of God's grace. His grace has provided for us and His grace will sustain us.

As we wrap up 2011 and move into the New Year, we want to remind ourselves and our listeners of the centrality of God's Word—the foundation and building blocks for all we do. We have discussed this more in depth in our Annual Report Booklet but would like to give you a quick preview of our plans for 2012.

Sunday Sermon: The Sadducees Question, Part One

In Mark 12:18-27, the Sadducees take their turn trying to catch Jesus in his words. Jesus' response revealed that, like those who had come before, their cynicism was founded on a spiritual problem: they did not believe their own scriptures or understand the power of God.

Providence: Dealing With Disappointment

Alistair Begg writes: A lesson we learn from Joseph’s time spent in the dungeon deals with disappointment and unfulfilled hopes. Have you ever been disappointed by events or people? Ever had desires and dreams and hopes that went unfulfilled? We’ve all had them. They are part of the package called life.

Providence: A Game Plan for Suffering: From Joseph to Jesus

Alistair Begg writes: What a saga of injustice, and what a potential for bitterness. Joseph was opposed, imprisoned, maligned, misunderstood, slandered, falsely accused and wrongfully persecuted. The details of his life, though, foreshadowed Christ. In talking about Christ, 1 Peter 2:23 says, “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”

Sunday Evening Sermon: "Worth-ship"

Why do Christians sing when we gather for worship? Our music allows us to participate together in praising our great God and edifying one another in the faith. As we build on the worship patterns of believers in the past, we are creating patterns of our own for generations yet to come.

Thank you, and thanks to your staff and supporters who make these sermons available free via podcast to us all.

2011 Year in Review: A Letter from Alistair Begg

Dear Friends,

"You accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God."

The Apostle Paul commended the believers in Thessalonica because of the manner in which they received the word of God. In light of this, it is interesting that Luke records the fact that the Jews in Berea were more noble than those in Thessalonica: "They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."

Providence: Powerful Ways to Deal With Temptation

Alistair Begg writes: "Temptation is Not From God. Here’s the first principle. God is never, ever the source of temptation, so we can’t lay the problem at His feet if we fail. After Joseph fled from Potiphar’s wife, she tried to lay the blame for her lust first at Joseph’s feet, and then at the feet of her husband (Genesis 39:13-18). She told the other servants Joseph had tried to rape her, and then insinuated to Potiphar that he was at fault for bringing Joseph into their home..."

Sunday Sermon: Render to Caesar...

From Sunday morning on November 13, Alistair Begg preaches from Mark 12:

"Why do you keep playing games with Jesus?" That's the issue that confronted those who questioned Jesus about paying taxes to Caesar and the issue that faces us today. In this study from Mark 12:13-17, we learn that Christ's kingdom takes precedence over every other kingdom and every agenda that we have.

Providence: Joseph Was Safe in God's Hand

Remember that Joseph's grandfather was Isaac. AS that old man sorted through his memories, he would have recountedthe story told in Genesis 22 of how his father, Abraham had been commanded by God to offer him as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah.

Providence: Habits of Highly Effective Slaves

Few of us suffer the circumstances Joseph contended with, and most of us would have forgiven Joseph for indulging in a little resentment, basking in a bit of self-pity, or viewing the world around him with bitterness. The prince had become a slave.

Providence: The Grace of God

In modern-day terms, Joseph came from a dysfunctional family. Indeed we all come from a dysfunctional background because sin makes people dysfunctional. But when you take all the sins of a large number of selfish people and mix them together in a family, you have an entity badly out of alignment with wheels turning in different directions...
