A soldier in Afghanistan wrote today and I wanted to pass along a portion of his note to you. For some context, while I am sure he does not earn much, this brother sent in a large donation. Very humbling.

On this final day to request a copy of Jerry Bridges’ The Transforming Power of the Gospel, we are ending our excerpts the way he ends his book – with motivation to pursue Christlikeness under grace, but also with the realization that we are still hoping for the day when we will be with Christ for sinless eternity.

In his last chapter, Bridges reiterates God’s clear command throughout Scripture, “Be Holy, for I am Holy.” But he also warns us of being preoccupied with ourselves as he writes:

Thank you, thank you for allowing free downloads. I so appreciate your ministry. I drive a truck and sometimes get the messages on the radio but miss a lot. This way, I can download and take them with me. I probably listen to 30 hours of good teaching a wee. Praise God for the technology and those willing to put it out there for us. Please send Jerry Bridges book, "The Transforming Power of the Gospel".

Our Agent of Transformation

Our Agent of Transformation

The transformation process the Bible describes is much more than a change of conduct or improved human morality; it is actually the work of the Holy Spirit in the very core of our being. In the only two instances in Scripture where the word transformed is used, it occurs both times in the passive voice. We are being transformed (2 Corinthians 3:18), and we are to be transformed (Romans 12:2). In both instances, we are the object, not the agent, of the transformation process; the agent is the Holy Spirit.

In this week’s featured sermon, Alistair addresses how knowledge of God and conduct of life go hand-in-hand. In writing to the Colossians, Paul’s main concern for them was that they would not only think biblically, but that they would live biblically. Paul realized the culture of the day greatly emphasized intellectual growth; however he hoped that the knowledge of God would make itself evident through the depth of their moral transformation. Nothing less than the holiness and loveliness of Christ was Paul’s aim for the Colossian believers.

The Apostle's Prayer, Part Two - Colossians 1:9-14

The Apostle Paul encourages us to pursue knowledge that will transcend us into a life worthy of Christ. Our incentive to live knowingly should not be aligned with how it makes us feel but instead, motivated by our desire to bring glory to God. In this message, Alistair Begg outlines four marks of a life that is pleasing to Jesus – fruitful, knowledgeable, powerful and thankful.

The Apostle's Prayer, Part One

We can often find our prayer life inconsistent and derailed by negative experiences or circumstances. Paul sets an example of prayer for us to emulate – a model of prayer that is stimulated, sustained and specific. God’s words, “You will know me when you spend time with me” are instruction for gaining true wisdom revealed through Jesus Christ.

In his second chapter of The Transforming Power of the Gospel, Jerry Bridges discusses the sinfulness of sin. He points out that in the last several decades our society has stopped calling actions “sin,” now we just call them “mistakes.” And within the church we have stopped identifying ourselves as “sinners saved by grace” rather, now we are “saints who sin.”

Dear Dr. Begg, My name is Karina. I am 20 years old and I live in Southern California. I just felt prompting in my heart to write to you and express my gratitude. I have been a regular user of your resources (both book and downloadable sermon form) for about 2-3 years now. I was actually first exposed to your teaching by my youth pastor, who provided my youth group with a copy of your talk on Relationships (a particular resource I have listened to more than a handful of times and have passed along to friends). I cannot tell you what a help and encouragement Truth For Life resources have been for me...

Introduction and Greetings - Colossians 1:1-2

Paul introduces himself as an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God. The words Paul writes are not merely the opinion of the great missionary but are the authoritative words of God. Here, Paul proclaims his testimony with his heart. In this message, we are challenged to test our own passion for the Gospel – “Do we have a testimony? Can we define our lives before and after we understood that Christ died for our salvation?”

Understanding the breadth of Christ's finished work is essential for the Christian life. This study in Hebrews 1 reminds us that Jesus is the Prophet who revealed God finally and fully, the Priest who reconciled lost people to God by sacrificing himself, and the triumphant King who reigns over all that he has made.

This month's featured offer is a tremendous book from Jerry Bridges entitled "The Transforming Power of the Gospel." Alistair Begg writes the following about this resource:

“Jerry Bridges tells us what we must never forget: God’s ultimate purpose for His people is to conform them to the image of His Son. Combining his characteristic brevity and lucidity, Bridges reminds us why it matters and how it is accomplished.”
