No matter what stage of life we are in, every believer needs to understand the link between the faith that we profess and the lifestyle that should characterize us. The challenge isn't to blend in with the culture, but by our distinctiveness, to adorn the gospel. In Titus 2:1-5, Paul begins this instruction in Christian living with older generation of men and women, whose stage in life presents new responsibilities and opportunities to influence those around them.

The Apostle Paul had a problem. A thorn in his flesh inhibited his natural ability to live his life and serve God as he wished. He prayed for the removal of his limitation, but Jesus had something better in mind, and he told Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Cor. 12:9). The entire Bible reveals that power is found in weakness for those who know Christ.

Why is it so important that elders be men who know, teach, and live the truth? Titus 1:10-16 explains that it is a matter of spiritual life and death. Elders must be able to teach the truth so that the people under their care know sound doctrine and are able to distinguish counterfeits in their midst.

The Basics 2012 Pastor’s Conference at Parkside Church was marked by a clear call for pastors to devote themselves to prayer and ministry of the Word. Teaching from Acts 6, pastors were encouraged to revisit the apostles’ theological decision to preach the Gospel, leaving the task of feeding widows to competent men in the church. While many today find themselves consumed by the latest fad or new idea, Alistair Begg affirmed that preaching and prayer are the primary duties of the pastor.

Mark Dever and Voddie Baucham joined Alistair Begg for the Basics 2012 Conference on May 14-16, 2012 at Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls, OH.

As we continue in Titus 1:5-16, we learn that the qualifications given for church elders are both positive (characteristics they must have) and negative (characteristics that must not be true of them). But most important of all is that they have a wholehearted committment to biblical truth.

If you have any way of passing this onto Alistair personally, please tell him how truly grateful I have been from what I have learned and been challenged with in the last year since I began listening to him. I am 24 years old, and was working in a warehouse shipping department, and would listen to him on my headphones while working. I have taken advantage of the free downloads as well (my favorite series being "Why Bother With the Bible"). On the 20th of April last month, our entire company was shut down, and I am currently unemployed. It is definitely God's timing, because I began pursuing His calling for me in life. By His grace I will be starting school here in the summer towards preaching God's Word. Truth For Life has been one of the greatest blessings for me to partake in! In one sermon Alistair had said he stays up at night wondering and hoping if his students are learning anything-- please pass along that this student has!

Browse through a book on leadership, and you may read that good leaders are marked by giftedness, personality, and organizational skills. But when Paul urged Titus to see that elders were appointed in the church at Crete, he provided a very different list of qualifications. In this study in Titus 1:5-9, we learn that the elders should be men whose lives are submitted to the word of God who shepherd the church by teaching and guarding the truth.

Paul wrote to Titus as a servant of God, appointed by grace, with a clear purpose in mind: to see people come to faith and grow in the faith to which they have come. This study in Titus 1:1-4 explores Paul's authority and the singlemindedness of his ministry to the people whom God has been calling to himself from eternity.
