When we consider prophetic passages like Mark 13, it helps to look at large principles instead of zooming in on details. We cannot fully understand God's providence in our daily lives: how much less can we understand His cosmic purposes? The Lord Jesus takes the correct approach by focusing on principles like "God reigns," "Be watchful," and "Have peace."

The promise
Abraham was not explicitly told that God’s people would be ruled by a king, but it is hinted at and clearly stated elsewhere. ‘...he will crush your head.’(Genesis 3:15)
God tells the snake that he will be defeated by one of Eve’s offspring. The rest of the Bible can be seen as a ‘search for the serpent-crusher’. Who will this great conqueror be?

When Moses dies he is succeeded by Joshua, and it is under him that the Israelites finally enter Canaan. They defeat the former inhabitants and take possession of the land for themselves. As they do so, they are left in no doubt that the conquest is not a victory they can claim for themselves. They are powerless, but God is mighty. That is seen most clearly in the siege of Jericho, when God causes the walls to collapse before them.

Most of the time, when the topic is "the end of the world," you hear a lot of speculation about dates and events and meanings. Mark 13 shows us a stiking difference in the way Jesus approached this subject. Instead of speculating about dates, the Lord provided His followers with practical instruction - actions and attitudes that will equip us to face the future He has planned...

After their [the Israelites] detour to meet God on Mount Sinai, we find the Israelites ready to set out on their journey to Canaan at the beginning of the book of Numbers. The rabble from Egypt is now organized and is beginning to look like an impressive army. And when they set out, God marches in front of them in a pillar of cloud (Numbers 10:11-12). Surely nothing can go wrong now. We expect them to reach their destination in a matter of months, but it actually takes them forty years...

Jacob and his family all move to Egypt to be with Joseph and settle there. By the beginning of the book of Exodus their hosts have enslaved their descendants and they are cruelly treated. God must set them free if they are to be his people as He promised. Through the long years of slavery they must wonder if he has forgotten the promise, but God can never do that. ‘The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Issac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them’ (Exodus 2:23-25)...

Over a period of 1,000 years, from Abraham to Solomon, we see the promise of the kingdom of God where God’s people are called to God’s place to live under God’s rule and blessing. This partial fulfillment however, does not happen smoothly. We can look to the story of Joseph to see the many bumps in the road; all however, to the fulfillment of God’s purpose...

There was nothing particularly special about Abraham. He was chosen not because of his goodness but because of God’s grace alone. There are three main elements to the promises he received: people, land and blessing.
People
Abraham’s descendants will become a great nation that will be God’s own people. This is later underlined when God says, ‘I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you’ (Genesis 17:7). The promise is frequently repeated throughout the Old Testament in the covenant refrain, ‘I will be your God and you will be my people.’...

The perfect trust and intimacy have now gone. They make coverings to hide their nakedness (verse 7). And it is not long before they start squabbling, as neither will accept responsibility for their actions. The battle of the sexes has begun. God tells the woman, ‘Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you’ (verse 16). The woman ‘desires’ her husband. The word may simply refer to sexual desire, but it may also suggest a longing to take control over him (the word is used in that sense in Genesis 4:7). If so, we are being told that the woman will no longer submit willingly to her husband’s lead and he will no longer exercise it in the loving, self-sacrificial way that was God’s design...

God and human beings
God lovingly cares for the man he has made. He places him in a beautiful garden and provides for all his needs, including the creation of woman to be his helper and companion. Adam and Eve are given great responsibility, but there is no doubt about who is ultimately in charge. It is God who sets the rules. But his law is not oppressive; it is for their good. He issues just one prohibition, which is designed to protect them: ‘... you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die’ (Genesis 2:17)...

"Scholars have debated for years whether or not it is possible to point to a unifying theme that binds the whole Bible together. Many have argued that the search for such a theme is fruitless: it is better just to accept that Scripture contains a number of different threads and then look at them individually without trying to unite them...
