To a generation in which the priority of preaching has been sadly diminished, the apostolic mandate of 2 Timothy 4:2-5 remains. As a pastor places his confidence in the power of the Gospel itself, as applied by the Holy Spirit, the task of proclamation must be his clear priority.

The heart of man is his worst part before it is regenerated, and the best afterward; it is the seat of principles, and the foundation of actions. The eye of God is, and the eye of the Christian ought to be, principally fixed upon it.

We as Christians affirm the truth declared in Scripture that not only was Jesus dead and buried, but "he was raised on the third day." We marvel at the fact that He was put to death for our sins and raised for our justification (Romans 4:25).

Eric Liddell is most widely known for his refusal to run on Sunday in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. A committed Christian, Liddell withdrew from his strongest event, the 100 meters – a decision that would years later make him the subject of the Oscar-winning film "Chariots of Fire." As an alternative, Liddell registered to run in the 400 meters. Just moments before the race, an American handed him a piece of paper on which was written a passage from 1 Samuel 2:30, "Those who honour me I will honour." Liddell ran the race with the verse in his hand and claimed Olympic Gold and new world record with a time of 47.6 seconds. When Eric described his race plan, he said, "The secret of my success over the 400 meters is that I run the first 200 meters as fast as I can. Then, for the second 200 meters, with God's help, I run faster."

Martin Luther referred to the Lord’s Prayer as "the greatest martyr on earth," because it was used, he said, so frequently without thought or feeling and without reverence or faith. In our Christian lives, nothing is more important, and nothing more difficult to establish and maintain, than a meaningful prayer life.
