The perfect trust and intimacy have now gone. They make coverings to hide their nakedness (verse 7). And it is not long before they start squabbling, as neither will accept responsibility for their actions. The battle of the sexes has begun. God tells the woman, ‘Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you’ (verse 16). The woman ‘desires’ her husband. The word may simply refer to sexual desire, but it may also suggest a longing to take control over him (the word is used in that sense in Genesis 4:7). If so, we are being told that the woman will no longer submit willingly to her husband’s lead and he will no longer exercise it in the loving, self-sacrificial way that was God’s design...

God and human beings
God lovingly cares for the man he has made. He places him in a beautiful garden and provides for all his needs, including the creation of woman to be his helper and companion. Adam and Eve are given great responsibility, but there is no doubt about who is ultimately in charge. It is God who sets the rules. But his law is not oppressive; it is for their good. He issues just one prohibition, which is designed to protect them: ‘... you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die’ (Genesis 2:17)...

"Scholars have debated for years whether or not it is possible to point to a unifying theme that binds the whole Bible together. Many have argued that the search for such a theme is fruitless: it is better just to accept that Scripture contains a number of different threads and then look at them individually without trying to unite them...

What prompted Alistair Begg to teach this topical series? How do the stories in the Bible tie together to trace God’s plan for our redemption? Is it possible to find Jesus in every book of the Bible? Even in the book of Ruth?

For centuries, rabbis were perplexed by some Old Testament passages that seem to point to multiple persons in the Godhead. For example, what are we to make of the plural pronouns in the early chapters of Genesis? In the creation account, there is the statement, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen. 1:26)...

Concerning our culture and spirituality, David F. Wells writes:
"Their spiritual yearning is now taking many different forms, such as the (sanitized) Hinduism of the New Age movement, kabbalah, radical environmentalism, and many self-made spiritualities. What they all have in common, though, is a view of reality that is pantheistic. All of them, in one way or another, assume that nature encloses and contains the sacred..."

We know from Genesis 1:1 that there was no creation before “the beginning.” Creation is not coeternal with God. Before the beginning of the created world, God dwelled alone. The universe was made by him, is providentially sustained by him, and is utterly dependent on him...

It may seem odd to us today that God did not begin to make himself known by first demolishing the idea that there are other gods. After Abraham's descendants became a people, God instead began by teaching them that they had to be exclusively loyal to him...

Early in the life of the church, God’s triune nature was condensed into several brief creedal statements. Numerous heresies challenged the biblical teaching on God. This came to a head in the fourth century, and the church responded with the writing of the Nicene Creed in 325. This brilliant work quickly became a landmark in clarifying what the Scriptures teach and what we are to believe...

If you were to thumb through Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, you’d find a sentence at the end that says, “May God Himself sanctify you through and through.” Alistair Begg helps us unpack the phrase and understand both the product and the promise behind sanctification.

God's disclosure of himself did not take place all at once. He revealed his triune nature only gradually and across large stretches of time. It is therefore revealed across a large swath of Scripture.

The materials we make available address many of the issues that are raised in listeners' letters. This month's resource is a good illustration of this. David Wells begins his treatment of the Trinity by observing:
"This much is certain. Had the Christian faith merely been a human invention, Christians would never have come up with the doctrine of the Trinity."

Eric Liddell (1902-1945) was a well-known Olympic athlete and missionary of the 20th century. The inspiring film "Chariots of Fire" chronicled his decision to withdraw from the 100-meter race in the 1924 Summer Olympics rather than race on Sunday. His strong religious convictions later led him to follow in his parent's footsteps, dedicating his life to serve as a missionary in China.

From The Disciplines of the Christian Life by Eric Liddell
"Humility is powerful, for it is based on the sense of being absolutely dependent on the grace of God. That is why a good Christian has such a serene and confident spirit, combined with the utmost humility. He aims very high, attempts great things and yet without proud looks or thoughts, because he is not thinking of himself, but of God. ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me’ (Philippians 4:13). He has the simple, childlike heart, because he depends so much on his heavenly Father.
