Jesus' prayer that the cup of God's wrath would be removed from him was a real request prompted by the horror of what was to come. But we can't come to grips with this prayer - or with Jesus' submission to the will of the Father - if we only think of it as his reaction to physical suffering. The agony that he faced was the reality that he would soon identify with sinners by drinking the cup of God's wrath against sin.
