What do a leper and a paraplegic have in common? In this story from the Gospel Mark about an encounter with Jesus, both men were in need of healing, both in body and in spirit. According to Jesus, the need for forgiveness is greater than for physical healing, and as it was for those two men, so it is for us.

In what does your life consist? A man has come to Rabbi Jesus with an apparently reasonable request: to resolve a family dispute about inheritance, hopefully in his favor. Jesus responds by challenging him, and us, to re-orient our entire way of thinking about material things.

When Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, cried out to Jesus for mercy, Jesus' followers rebuked him. In this study of Mark 10:46-52, we learn that Bartimaeus wasn't the only blind person with Jesus that day. His healing demonstrated that everyone is blind before God gives spiritual sight.

What is circumcision? Do you have uncircumcised lips and ears? Paul reminds the Colossian church that circumcision is performed by Christ, not by man and explains what baptism means. After coming to faith, believers are baptized as a symbol of one dying with Christ. The old has gone and the new has come and we have freedom in Christ. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, as Jesus came and fulfilled the Law and turned the cross into a picture of triumph as the final destruction of evil.

Thinking well of oneself is one of the highest values in our society. Our schools and counseling programs burgeon with programs to help people in this area. So why does the Bible treat it as a problem? Is it an asset, or our most pervasive and subtle enemy?

How would you have responded to Jesus' revelation that he was going to Jerusalem to lay down his life? With adoration and awe? It's far more likely that we would all respond just like the disciples did - with selfish concern for our own interests. This study in Mark 10:32-32 confronts our pride with the truth that believers in Christ are called to live differently, and challenges the Church to let go of status and privilege for the sake of the gospel.
