We live in a world that is preoccupied with personality and the influence of high-profile celebrities has a significant impact on the way people think and live. In contrast to this the bible is filled with examples of how God delights in using ordinary people in extraordinary ways. These studies recount the lives of biblical characters that were used by God much like a clay pot in the hands of its maker. Some will be familiar and others will be new-found friends. Through them we’ll discover the characteristics which mark useful people and see the potential of an "ordinary" person ...

What makes a church effective? Is it having a functional building, excellent worship music, a vibrant youth program or a teaching ministry? Our answers may vary, but the burgeoning church in the book of Acts clearly provides us with seven elements to which every church should strive. These marks include: The Apostle’s Teaching, Fellowship, The Sacraments, Prayer, Mutual Care, Worship, and Continuous Evangelism. No church will ever master all of these elements, but they should be the marks to which church leaders are guiding their people. Is your church on the right course? If your searching for church in which ...

No concern is more vital to the church than the gospel itself, the life-changing message of Christ that inspires worship, equips for service, enables fellowship, and compels outreach. "You will be my witnesses," said Jesus..."Go and make disciples of all peoples." While owing its very existence to the gospel, the church can be easily distracted from this fundamental calling. In keeping with this year's theme, Evangelism In and Through the Local Church, conference addresses, question-answer sessions, and Bible expositions emphasized that the gospel is less than a project or program and more the very heartbeat of a living church. The ...

Paul’s second letter to Timothy issues a direct challenge to all who are tempted to embrace pragmatism at the expense of truth. Timothy is confronted by confusion in the realm of doctrine and morality. It was vital that he understood the absolute priority of defining and declaring the gospel so as to be able to speak with authority in an age of uncertainty. Some 2000 years later we face the same challenge and these studies prepare us to meet it. If you feel inadequate for the task of sharing the Good News and wonder whether God can use someone like ...

Who or what is the church? Some might think there are more pressing issues to address in today’s world, but there’s no question that the word ‘church’ conjures up all kinds of images. Indeed it is a word which is very often misunderstood. Many believe it to relate simply to a building, or perhaps to a certain group of people identifying themselves as members of the clergy. Some view the church as an object of mistrust, a place of hypocrisy, or perhaps just as a place for old ladies or those who like to sing in choirs - in other ...

Evangelism. The word alone produces a tightness in the stomach and anguish in the hearts of many Christians. Does this nerve-jangling word produce that type of fear in you? That may be one of the barriers that hinders you from sharing the Good News of Christ. Does the Bible call us to brazenly accost people in the streets with the demands of the gospel, and do we somehow think we will be able to coerce the unbeliever into believing the "Good News?" Many Christians misunderstand the biblical directives and shy away from such prospects thinking "I don’t have the gift ...

The overarching story in the book of Acts is the evangelism of the lost. The early believers shared and witnessed the Good News of the Lord Jesus, and God added to their numbers daily. A Spirit-filled church is not self-centered and self-contained but mission-driven by nature. This does not mean that every child of God needs to evangelize in a faraway land. Carrying out missionary discipleship within our normal daily routine can equally bring glory to God.

"I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ." (Philemon 6) The more we share the "good news" with others, the more we become aware of the wonder of our salvation. These studies call us to take seriously the opportunities for evangelism which are around us every day. Only a few will be called to go to the ends of the earth, but are called to expend ourselves in the cause of telling our friends, relatives, associates and neighbors about who Jesus ...
