Many of us are familiar with the phrase "the pursuit of happiness", but does the pursuit guarantee the reward? Psalm 32 provides the key to genuine happiness, which is found in being forgiven by God and living in obedience to His word.

Three times he was asked, and three times Peter denied that he knew Jesus - then a rooster crowed, and Peter was faced with his own failure. In our study of the final portion of Mark 14, we consider how this experience shaped the apostle's character, and how God uses brokenness in our lives to enable us to serve others for His sake.

Like the Psalmist, God’s people will often go through periods of guilt where we become paralyzed in confessing our sin. In these moments of silence we groan and forget about our Savior. By confessing our sin, we discover the reality of our forgiveness and that our forgiven state is not marginal, but total. It does us no good to remember what God has chosen to forget.

When Jesus told his disciples that they will receive "whatever you ask in prayer," did He mean it only as a symbol or metaphor? As we work through these verses in Mark's gospel in light of the rest of scripture, we find the balance we need by believing God will do the impossible while at the same time humbly submitting to His sovereign will.

What do a leper and a paraplegic have in common? In this story from the Gospel Mark about an encounter with Jesus, both men were in need of healing, both in body and in spirit. According to Jesus, the need for forgiveness is greater than for physical healing, and as it was for those two men, so it is for us.

What is circumcision? Do you have uncircumcised lips and ears? Paul reminds the Colossian church that circumcision is performed by Christ, not by man and explains what baptism means. After coming to faith, believers are baptized as a symbol of one dying with Christ. The old has gone and the new has come and we have freedom in Christ. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, as Jesus came and fulfilled the Law and turned the cross into a picture of triumph as the final destruction of evil.

Levi the tax collector was a model example of a sinner being frowned upon by society and the religious authorities in his day. Either a person’s self-assured goodness or their visible failures can keep them from trusting in Christ. God’s law levels the playing field, deeming us all guilty and condemned. The work of Christ alone is sufficient for the greatest of sinners and the best of men.

Jesus challenges our preoccupation with the here and now, with those things that are felt and seen. As His earthy ministry advances, many seek His miraculous healing power to resolve their physical suffering. But Jesus’ message is not an earthly one. Beyond the paralysis of our bodies, Jesus is concerned with the paralysis of our souls. It is our need to be forgiven of our sin that supersedes all other concerns.
