The Basics 2012 Pastor’s Conference at Parkside Church was marked by a clear call for pastors to devote themselves to prayer and ministry of the Word. Teaching from Acts 6, pastors were encouraged to revisit the apostles’ theological decision to preach the Gospel, leaving the task of feeding widows to competent men in the church. While many today find themselves consumed by the latest fad or new idea, Alistair Begg affirmed that preaching and prayer are the primary duties of the pastor. Mark Dever and Voddie Baucham joined Alistair Begg for the Basics 2012 Conference on May 14-16, 2012 at ...

Why is it so important that elders be men who know, teach, and live the truth? Titus 1:10-16 explains that it is a matter of spiritual life and death. Elders must be able to teach the truth so that the people under their care know sound doctrine and are able to distinguish counterfeits in their midst.

Moving into the second chapter of Titus, it is helpful to focus first on what Paul says directly to this younger pastor, in verses 1, 7-8, and 15. The apostle's messsage is clear and consistent: teach sound doctrine - with dignity and integrity, with good works and godly character, and with the authority given by God himself.

Paul identifies the marks of those who teach under false pretenses. He instructs the Colossians to be mature in their faith and distinguish between those who belong to Christ and those who do not. He warns to avoid false teachers who commend themselves, who preach by consensus, who preach out of envy or rivalry and who preach for profit. These challenges continue to be relevant to Christians today.

Here we are warned not to add anything to our faith in Christ Jesus by requiring additional experiences, thus making Christianity selective through experiential commonalities. The mystery of the Gospel is not in its exclusiveness, belonging to a few, but in its inclusiveness, open to everyone.

The cause of Jesus Christ moves forward by means of the combined efforts of church leaders, who are in the public eye, and countless unseen, but equally crucial helpers, working together under the direction and grace of God. In Colossians 4:15-18, Apostle Paul closes his letter to the believers of Colosse by urging them to continue in their commitment to complete the work entrusted to them by God. Discover why faithfulness, not success, is the priority of effective, biblical ministries.

Wise delegation of responsibilities is vital for a church or ministry to thrive and press forward in the purposes of God. Without it, leaders will become overwhelmed, lose the vision of the church, and fail to develop the untapped resources around them. In Colossians 4:7-9, we discover the seven principles of delegation, and how to determine the best candidates for the transition of responsibilities.

Each year, our return to the basics provides us with the opportunity and privilege to gather together as partners in the Gospel and to renew our passion for preaching God’s Word. This year, we are glad to put our focus on one of the core tenets of our pastoral ministry – doing the work of an evangelist. As Charles Spurgeon reminds us, “Cling to the great truth of electing love and divine sovereignty, but let not these bind you in fetters when, in the power of the Holy Spirit, you become fishers of men.” We pray that our hearts, minds, ...

So often it is easy to get the gospel message wrong; to lose one of the components of identity, mission and call will lead to disastrous consequences. Rico compellingly takes the listener to Mark 9 and 10 where we have an extended insight into the human thinking of the disciples. Eager to gain power and adulation, the disciple's desire for human greatness was so clearly antithetical to the gospel message Jesus was seeking to proclaim. The message Jesus was presenting was a series of choices: self-seeking or sacrifice, power or service, security or suffering?
