We live in a day and age when who you are and what you do is everything. So, how should we interpret the apostle Paul’s identification of himself as a “wretched man?” Modern day onlookers might remark that Paul suffers from a poor self-image, but yet Paul’s admission is the first step towards acknowledging that no amount of good deeds can secure the status promised in Romans 8:1: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Despite out best efforts, none of us is able to keep the law. What good is it then? In Romans 8, Paul explains that the Law is given to define and show us our sin, but that salvation comes through Christ alone.
