The Motivation of Love

2 Corinthians 5:14–15  (ID: GS846)

God’s love is the most powerful force on earth, boundless and unconditional—an infinite ocean, in John Owen’s terms. Preaching the Gospel to ourselves acts as a daily reminder of that love’s nature. Jerry Bridges encourages us that experiencing God’s love will drive us also to love and serve in ways that duty or guilt never could. If we worry we aren’t lovable, we need only remember that we are made so because of what Christ has done.

14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
