Joseph of Arimathea was wealthy, well-respected, and religious. He was also a secret disciple of Jesus until the events of the crucifixion brought him into the open with a courageous request to care for the body of Jesus. In the providence of God, the result was prophecy fulfilled.

In the 15th chapter of his gospel account, Mark describes the crucifixion. The particular details he provides, far from being random facts and observations, lead instead to a deeper understanding of what Christ accomplished on the cross - bearing sin and enduring God's judgment to redeem His own.

Mark 15:38-41 describes the witnesses to Jesus' crucifixion. The centurion was present out of duty, but recognized the unusual nature of Jesus' death. The women remained with Jesus as a demonstration of devotion. Mark invites us to witness the surprising details of the crucifixion and to respond as they did - with wonder and commitment.

What do you see when you consider the cross of Jesus Christ? There is extreme cruelty on display, but there is also more to the story. The cross also displays the majesty of Jesus fulfilling scripture, reigning as king, and accomplishing God's plan to redeem sinners. The cross of Christ doesn't call for our sympathy, but it does demand a response.

Jesus' prayer that the cup of God's wrath would be removed from him was a real request prompted by the horror of what was to come. But we can't come to grips with this prayer - or with Jesus' submission to the will of the Father - if we only think of it as his reaction to physical suffering. The agony that he faced was the reality that he would soon identify with sinners by drinking the cup of God's wrath against sin.

God's love for us - for each one of us - is expressed in the great cost He paid at Calvary, bearing the wrath that our sins deserve. But as we learn in this Good Friday message, until the Holy Spirit shows me my sinfulness, I won't understand my need of salvation.

Man’s moral dilemma did not take God by surprise. Before time began Jesus made a covenant with His Father to save His people from their sins. What Jesus did in life and in death actually accomplished something. Christ was a substitute and bore the wrath of God in place of sinners. The punishment that we deserved was put upon Christ. We can now be free from the guilt of sin if we believe in this amazing work.

The definitive event in the history of the universe is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross. Yet the church is in danger of so trivializing the notion of sin that the cross of Christ becomes an antiquated preaching point. Pastor Alistair Begg preaches from 1 Corinthians 1 on Paul’s determination to preach Christ and him crucified in every opportunity. At the risk of being repetitive, pastors everywhere must endeavor to preach the one thing which can achieve forgiveness for man and his greatest need- forgiveness and reconciliation to a holy God.

Journalist Peggy Noonan said recently that we have raised up a generation of people ‘with no proper sense of inadequacy’. Today most false gospels highlight man’s achievements and man’s abilities, and yet Paul reminds the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 1 that ‘not many of you were wise…not many were influential…not many were of noble birth’. As pastor’s we need to be reminded of our insignificance and Christ’s preeminence. The pastor’s faith and message are not based in his personality, but rather in his proclamation- the proclamation of the cross of Jesus Christ.
