As they do in all human institutions, disagreements and conflicts sometimes arise in the local church. When that happens, how should church leaders respond? In Titus 3:9-11, Paul teaches that the voice of the shepherd must be both gentle and loud: gentle to comfort the wounded and frightened, and loud to warn of danger when necessary.

Why is it so important that elders be men who know, teach, and live the truth? Titus 1:10-16 explains that it is a matter of spiritual life and death. Elders must be able to teach the truth so that the people under their care know sound doctrine and are able to distinguish counterfeits in their midst.

Moving into the second chapter of Titus, it is helpful to focus first on what Paul says directly to this younger pastor, in verses 1, 7-8, and 15. The apostle's messsage is clear and consistent: teach sound doctrine - with dignity and integrity, with good works and godly character, and with the authority given by God himself.

As we continue in Titus 1:5-16, we learn that the qualifications given for church elders are both positive (characteristics they must have) and negative (characteristics that must not be true of them). But most important of all is that they have a wholehearted committment to biblical truth.

“What is the pathway to spiritual fullness?” The question was asked by the church in Colossae but the people were being harmed by answers that were lies. Paul warns the people of Colossians to beware of false teachers and not to go near them if they valued their spiritual freedom. We are reminded here by Paul that spiritual fullness is found only in Christ, who is fully God.

Here we are warned not to add anything to our faith in Christ Jesus by requiring additional experiences, thus making Christianity selective through experiential commonalities. The mystery of the Gospel is not in its exclusiveness, belonging to a few, but in its inclusiveness, open to everyone.

False spiritual leadership – those who operate under the banner of religion but who are really unconverted and un-commissioned, are of great threat to any church. The Colossian Christians were facing heresy by false teachers and Paul’s letter was purposeful in its intent to clarify the truth. Without a Gospel-centered ministry, a church risks being directed by notions and whims.

When people seek Jesus, whom do they hope to find? In this message from Colossians we learn that Jesus is the head of the Church – its source of direction, authority and power, and the only reconciler between man and God.

The challenge for today’s churches to remain rooted in the truth of the Gospel is not new. In fact, the church in Colossae during the days of the Apostle Paul was influenced by many worldly falsehoods, including superstition, mythology and even simple error in doctrinal translation. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul imposes two key messages which are as applicable today as they were then. First, he re-confirms that all things were created and hold together through Jesus Christ and that we must walk with Him and hold steadfast to our faith in His saving power. Paul then provides ...

If we hear someone boasting about mystical experiences they have had, how do we respond? In Colossians 2:18-19, Paul confronts false teaching that judges the faith of others, based on mysticism. God can and does act in our lives supernaturally; however, our faith must be based on Christ – His work and His word – not on our experiences.
