Ask what makes a good worship service, and you are likely to get many different responses. In this study from Psalm 100, we see the Bible's answer: we need to know God. God's people are exhuberant, joyful, and thankful in corporate expressions of worship as all that we know of him forms the foundation of our praise.

In Habakkuk 3, we see the result of his pilgrimmage of faith, from testing through learning to triumph. Faith that can face disaster and still rejoice in God must be based on fact: the fact of God’s past faithfulness in history, and especially the fact of His redeeming work on the Cross. This is true saving faith.

The cries of the human heart do not change from one generation to the next. The expressions of the Psalmist, then, remain strikingly relevant and understandable to us today. Through petition, praise, lament and song, the Psalmist articulates both the difficulties of living in a fallen world but also the eternal truths about the character of God. Those who are burdened by life’s trials will discover that the Psalms are, as one commentator called them, “the soul’s medicine chest.” This book is a source of encouragement and hope, and it also provides an impetus for worship and prayer. With clarity ...

“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” The letter of James is vital reading whenever the believer is tempted to be content with knowledge devoid of action, to cultivate the world’s friendship rather than God’s, and to tolerate disorder and selfish ambition. As we’ll learn, James shows us that the outward display of faith will find its roots in the inward transformation that has already taken place. These studies provide a forceful and timely reminder that our creed must be seen in our conduct and our attitude must display itself in action.

A great disservice has been done to the cause of Christ by those who have tended to suggest that Christianity is all brightness and laughter. Such a perspective is neither true to the biblical record, nor to the human experience. The joy of which the Bible speaks is not found in isolation from the rigors of life. James encourages us to "count it all joy" when we face trials of various kinds. The studies contained in this album make it very clear that Christians grieve, too. They, also, seek to provide a biblical framework for dealing with affliction, trial, and ...
