Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that the ascended Christ gave gifts to establish and build up His church. In this study, we look closely at one of those gifts: the pastor who leads and cares for his flock.

Each person is constantly interpreting their world through a grid, through a specific lens. Kevin DeYoung contrasts viewing life through the lens of fairness contra the glasses of grace. Taking us to the Parable of the Vineyard Laborers in Matthew 20, Kevin takes the three questions at the end of Jesus' famous parable to help expose how often the pastor's heart can give into viewing life through the lens of fairness rather than the glasses of grace.

The Basics 2012 Pastor’s Conference at Parkside Church was marked by a clear call for pastors to devote themselves to prayer and ministry of the Word. Teaching from Acts 6, pastors were encouraged to revisit the apostles’ theological decision to preach the Gospel, leaving the task of feeding widows to competent men in the church. While many today find themselves consumed by the latest fad or new idea, Alistair Begg affirmed that preaching and prayer are the primary duties of the pastor. Mark Dever and Voddie Baucham joined Alistair Begg for the Basics 2012 Conference on May 14-16, 2012 at ...

As we continue in Titus 1:5-16, we learn that the qualifications given for church elders are both positive (characteristics they must have) and negative (characteristics that must not be true of them). But most important of all is that they have a wholehearted committment to biblical truth.

Voddie Baucham teaches from Paul’s final letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 1) where he opens his heart up before God. Voddie encourages preachers to not only preach, but to pray. A shepherd who preaches must be a shepherd who prays, and therefore the shepherd who prays will always be a shepherd who preaches. If the preacher finds himself at a point in life where prayer is absent, it’s directly indicative of one who is moving away from dependence on God.

Speaking to pastors, Mark Dever outlined the characteristics that distinguish a healthy church from an unhealthy church. He detailed what he has termed “the 9 Marks” of differentiation: expositional preaching, the Gospel, biblical theology, a biblical understanding of conversion, evangelism, church membership, discipline, concern for promoting discipleship and growth, and a biblical understanding of church leadership.

Paul identifies the marks of those who teach under false pretenses. He instructs the Colossians to be mature in their faith and distinguish between those who belong to Christ and those who do not. He warns to avoid false teachers who commend themselves, who preach by consensus, who preach out of envy or rivalry and who preach for profit. These challenges continue to be relevant to Christians today.
