Speaker Voddie Baucham of Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas, introduced the topic of “Family Shepherds” at one of several breakout sessions held during the first day of the Basics 2012 Pastor’s Conference at Parkside Church. Voddie Baucham presented four key attributes of the often overlooked role of fathers: the necessity of family discipleship and evangelism, the need for marriage enrichment, the importance of child training, and the need to have a reflective time of lifestyle evaluation.

In truly Christian families, each member affirms that "Jesus is Lord." Husbands and wives display their love for the Lord Jesus in giving themselves wholeheartedly to the privileges and responsibilities of marriage. Children also display their understanding of Jesus’ Lordship by respecting and obeying their parents. When everyone in the family follows this biblical mandate it makes for healthy churches and stable societies. This study from Colossians 3 will help you communicate the gospel to your family, friends and neighbors by living out the Lordship of Jesus in your home.

"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God." Proverbs 2:1-5 Derek Kidner, in his wonderful little commentary, says the book of Proverbs "performs the function of putting godliness into working clothes." In other words it’s not a very "churchy" ...

Being a father can provide constant challenges, especially when trying to find the right balance between giving discipline and giving grace. One child may become exasperated by certain elements of correction while another may need diligent instruction. In the end, a father’s love for his child must remain unconditional in the same way our Heavenly Father’s love is unconditional toward His children. A father or mother may not even see the benefits of loving in this way until they see their child united with Christ for all of eternity.

A distinct sign of a crumbling society is that children no longer obey their parents. It is now often perceived as anti-cultural and, even “old-fashioned,” to believe that parents have authority over their children. When children are captured by the love and lordship of Christ, they will be more inclined to obey their parents in a heartfelt and sincere way. They will be markedly different from others around them, bringing testimony to the wonder of God’s amazing grace.
