Dear Friends,
One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is: “Who are the biggest influences on you in your role as a pastor?” In response, I’m able to provide a long list of names from the ranks of both the living and the dead. In terms of the former, Derek Prime must come at the top of the list. It was my privilege to serve as his assistant at Charlotte Chapel from 1975-1977.
When I visited that church to be interviewed by the elders, their concern was that I was too young to be useful. Derek went to bat on my behalf and convinced them that with his tutelage and a good attitude on my part, the venture would prove successful. Looking back on it, I’m not sure that I was particularly useful to him, but his guidance was vital for me. There is never a week that passes without me realizing how much I still do directly as a result of his example.
In light of this, it is easy for me to commend our featured resource for the month of June, Directions for Christian Living by Derek Prime. It is so good that you ought to obtain three copies: one for yourself, your pastor and your best friend. (Although if your pastor is your best friend, then you only need to get two.)
I’m also greatly encouraged by the response there has been to the book we offered in May: My First Book of Questions and Answers. Perhaps I find myself paying particularly close attention to this because Sue and I recently became grandparents. I’m seriously considering working through these questions and answers on Sunday evenings with my congregation so that together we can become increasingly convinced of the truths of the Gospel upon which we have taken our stand.
Last month, we visited Minneapolis and it was, as always, a genuine privilege to greet those in that area who support the ministry of Truth For Life prayerfully and financially. Although we have no visits planned for this month, I’m hoping that a number of you will include a visit to Parkside in your summer plans so that we might have the opportunity to thank you personally for your continued partnership in the Gospel.
Warmest Christian greetings,
Alistair Begg
