In the final weeks of his life, Jesus deliberately turned his attention toward Jerusalem and the events that awaited him there. While the disciples followed him on his physical journey toward the city, they remained woefully out of step with his greatest redemptive concerns.

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. -Mark 8:31

During his advance to Jerusalem with his disciples, Jesus began his most explicit teaching on the purpose of his life and ministry—to die on a cross and rise from the dead. Yet, the disciples interrupted His teaching with An Ill-Conceived Rebuke, an Ill-Advised Argument, and An Ill-Timed Request. Their concept of the Messiah did not include one who would die in shame, but rather a warrior who would lead them to triumph and glory.

But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it. -Mark 9:32
