For the Sake of the Gospel: The Decision (Part 10 of 15)

Over the past few days, we have been introduced to three very different men who governed Judea: Felix, Festus, and King Agrippa II. Although their responses to Paul’s witness were as unique as the men themselves, they had one thing in common. Having heard the good news of the Gospel clearly proclaimed, they rejected it.

Magnificent Obsession: Jesus is the source of my forgiveness

No matter how I tried to escape it, I could not get away from the fact that I was born in sin, I would live in sin and I would die in sin.

For the Sake of the Gospel: King Agrippa II Arrives (Part 9 of 15)

Paul appealed to Caesar, and Festus, the governor of Judea, had to write a letter to Caesar explaining the charges against him. The problem was that most of the charges were Jewish laws and not something the Roman courts would handle.

Magnificent Obsession: The Bible

Dear J.
Thanks for the letter and the questions within. I’ll try to cover most of them but there is one that we need to address right away, because it is a question that causes great confusion. You ask why Christians are so divided about what the teaching of Jesus actually is. Why are there so many disputes that I criticized in my last letter? Isn’t it just everyone making up a Jesus in their own image?

For the Sake of the Gospel: Who is Felix? (Part 7 of 15)

In Acts 23:12, the Jews devise a plot to kill Paul. Paul’s nephew, though,, learns of these intentions and informs the Apostle of the conspiracy against him. Immediately, Paul asks one of the centurions to take his nephew to the tribune and to tell them what he has learned. Once the Roman authorities hear of the plot, Paul is quickly and quietly moved to Caesarea, the home city of the governor of Judea named Felix.

Magnificent Obsession: Why Did Jesus do Miracles?

You are probably quite right in thinking you will never see a miracle done: you are probably equally right in thinking that there was a natural explanation of anything in your past life which seemed, at the first glance, to be ‘rum’ or ‘odd’. God does not shake miracles into nature at random as if from a pepper pot.

Magnificent Obsession: Did Jesus do miracles?

The trouble is that a postmodern view of history has taken a grip of many (non) thinkers. History is seen only through the eye of the recipient and, just as you can have a pick ‘n’ mix theology, so you can have a pick ‘n’ mix view of history.

For the Sake of the Gospel: Jerusalem’s Most Wanted (Part 6 of 15)

Paul was warned by the disciples in Caesarea not to go to Jerusalem. One man even demonstrated how once in the city, Paul would be bound and handed over to the Gentiles by the Jews (Acts 21:11). Paul was insistent, though, and willing to risk imprisonment, even death, for the name of the Lord Jesus.

For the Sake of the Gospel: The Church in Jerusalem (Part 4 of 15)

The church in Jerusalem was composed largely of Jews who wanted to maintain as many of their Jewish traditions as possible. There are ways in which that might be done rightly, at least in part, just as German Christians can retain certain German customs while still being Christians, and so on. But it was more complicated than that in this case.

For the Sake of the Gospel: Jerusalem or Bust! (Part 3 of 15)

After encouraging the Ephesian church leaders, Paul travelled by ship to Jerusalem for Pentecost. Luke was his travel companion. They made the trip by sea, then by land. Only a short time was spent in each city throughout the trip; just a day or two in some places, and a week in others, as dictated by the boat’s shipment unloading schedule.

June Featured Resource: Magnificent Obsession

For the unbeliever, the desire for indisputable proof and hard evidence can be a stumbling block for accepting the foundations of Christianity. David Robertson confronts these stumbling blocks head on and counter argues the atheist perspective point by point. Addressing the historicity of the Gospels, the robust evidence for the miracles of Jesus, and the transforming power of the living Word of God in the Bible, Robertson firmly exhorts that faith in Christ is not based on ignorance, but on knowledge.
