Alistair Begg July Letter

Dear Friend,

After God led Joshua and the Israelites through the waters of the Jordan bearing the Ark of the Covenant, God instructed Joshua to build a memorial of stones so that all generations to come may know of God’s faithfulness to His people. “…When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over…” (Joshua 4:21-23).

Psalm 71:17-18Tradition and history can teach us who we are, who God is, and why we are to live according to His commandments. For many of our children and grandchildren though, both tradition and history are increasingly less relevant. This generation is characterized by a sense of transience. Life is lived 'in the moment,' and often this moment is all that matters. Many young people lack the historical and biblical foundation to understand that the only reason this moment matters is because there were moments that came before it, and there will be moments that come after it. When we teach our children and grandchildren that they belong to a long lineage of God's people, we uphold our responsibility to the next generation. This chapter from Joshua serves as a good reminder that our children need to be taught about the Almighty God who existed before the world began, is all powerful, and is building an eternal kingdom.

As partners in the ministry of Truth For Life, we are grateful that you share our commitment to teach the Bible verse by verse. We do this because we believe that God speaks to us, and to our children, through His Word and through the lives of those who walked before us in faith. As Bible teaching becomes increasingly scarce, our children are susceptible to theological vagueness and confusion. Without learning from the Spirit of God, it is not possible to be transformed by the Spirit of God.

VBS at Parkside Church

This summer, as you spend time with your children and grandchildren, I hope you will find an opportunity to share the stories of the Bible with them. Children of all ages will be greatlyhelped by discovering that the God who drove back the Red Sea, and who stopped the Jordan, and who saved Daniel from the lions, is the same God who is loving, eternal, and sent His Son Jesus to be a Savior and Friend.

Our current series, For the Sake of the Gospel makes for a great adventure to share as well. Paul’s third missionary journey in the book of Acts tells of a riot, an arrest, a trial, a shipwreck and even a poisonous snake bite! The older children may find this series quite captivating and at the same time, come to understand the power of God’s sovereign will.

Your financial investment in the Gospel through Truth For Life is having a life-changing impact on many people. We hear inspiring stories of God’s transforming power from listeners who hear the program on the radio, online, on podcast, and on the mobile app. Please be assured that your giving is truly making a difference. Thank you for your faithful partnership.

With my love in the Lord Jesus,

P.S. If your local church is hosting Vacation Bible School this summer and looking for volunteers, you may find it a fruitful way to help bring the Gospel to the next generation.
