Galatians 5 can easily be interpreted as a to-do list, and we often view self-control as a quality that can be achieved by simply trying harder. Instead, Alistair Begg explains that self-control is an attribute attained as a result of the refining work of the Spirit of God. Just as God’s grace saved those in Christ from sin’s penalty, His grace also saves Christians from sin’s dominion. In this process, we are dependent on God’s grace to display the fruit of the Spirit in every success and failure.
