Writing to encourage the Thessalonians to live in light of the certainty of Christ’s return, Paul reminded them that their activity should reflect their identity. Alistair Begg explains that the basis for walking in the light is who we are in Christ, which is based on what God has done for us. Like the Thessalonian believers, we must stay alert, guard our hearts, and encourage one another with the Word of God as we look forward to the return of the Lord.
8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
