Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:17-20
How can a once proud Pharisee, a prosperous homeowner, and his runaway slave become united in love for one another? What lessons can we learn from their example? The New Testament book of Philemon gives us a glimpse into the story behind this surprising relationship and points us to the reconciliation that is found in Christ.
Philemon was a wealthy Colossian slave-owner who had come under Paul’s influence and had become a follower of Jesus. One of Philemon’s slaves, Onesimus, ran away to Rome where he providentially encounters the Apostle Paul and also commits his life to Christ.
In submission to Christ’s Lordship in his life, Onesimus must return to Philemon—even at great risk to himself. The legal structure of the day gave Philemon the right to treat the escaped slave however he chose. Yet Philemon himself was subject to a higher Master—and Onesimus was now a brother in Christ. It is on this basis that Paul appeals for reconciliation between Philemon and Onesimus.
As Alistair Begg leads us through a study of this personal letter from Paul to Philemon, we gain hope for our broken relationships as we consider the example of a once useless slave becoming a useful brother to both Paul and Philemon. Through their experience, we will see that the Road of Reconciliation begins in a restored relationship with God offered to us by Christ’s death on the cross.
