Jesus’ prayer that the cup of God’s wrath would be removed from Him was a real request prompted by the horror of what was to come. We can’t come to grips with it, or with Jesus’ submission to the will of the Father, if we only think of it as His reaction to physical suffering. The agony He faced was the reality that He would soon identify with sinners by drinking the cup of God’s wrath against sin. Alistair Begg explains that Christ’s obedience to fulfill His Father’s will ultimately triumphed over His natural sense to recoil from the task.
