Though his words sounded harsh, when John the Baptist called the crowd that came to hear him a “brood of vipers,” he actually spoke with a fiery sense of compassion. Like some in the church today, many in the crowd were religious, but lost. Alistair Begg explains that by calling these listeners to repent, John was urging them to turn away from their bondage to sin and empty religion and toward abundant and eternal life in Christ.
