As he drew his first letter—a kind of first-century discipleship manual—to a close, the apostle Peter explained, “I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.” His was a message the believers of his day needed to hear. Scattered, oppressed, and buffeted by hostility from their unbelieving neighbors and authorities, they needed to be reminded to hold tight to the Gospel they had received while living as “sojourners and exiles,” in and yet not of the pagan world around them.
In this series, Alistair Begg walks us through 1 Peter, helping us to see that its vital message remains just as relevant today. As twenty-first-century believers, we, too, often find ourselves to be living as “resident aliens,” with the prevailing winds of our culture blowing fiercely in our faces. Yet, as Peter reminds us, our security lies ultimately in the God who has secured our salvation and promises to keep us until, finally, He brings us home.
