Communion with Christ

When Christians gather to share in the Lord’s Supper, how do we understand the word “Communion”? Alistair Begg defines this word as meaning “participation,” referring to the fellowship that believers share in this special event. Jesus wants His people to avoid participating with darkness and instead meet with Him. When we take Communion, we are not re-enacting Christ’s death but revealing the meaning of His sacrifice.

14Therefore, my beloved, yflee from idolatry. 15I speak zas to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16aThe cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? bThe bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one bread, we who are many are cone body, for we all partake of the one bread.
