In the wake of September 11, 2001, people wondered, “What in the world is going on?” In this heartfelt response, Alistair Begg answers that question with truth from God’s Word. From Romans 8, he reminds us that though we suffer along with all creation in this present time, our glory and salvation is coming with the return of Christ. No matter what may happen in this life, in Christ we face no condemnation by Him and no separation from Him.
18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because7 the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,8 for those who are called according to his purpose.
September 11, 2001 will be remembered as the day that changed the modern world. As Franklin Roosevelt declared 60 years before, this too is a day that will live in infamy. Most, if not all, of the civilized world paused to reflect on their own lives in light of the catastrophic events at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and rural Pennsylvania. It is in such times that the basics take center stage. We think and pray to God about family and friends, love and forgiveness, and begin to prioritize that which is most important to us. You may even have asked yourself questions like, "Why did this happen?" "What if I had been there?" or "Am I ready to die?"
In this series of messages, Alistair Begg takes us back to the basics, reminding us that life is frail and death is real. Spiritually speaking we are trapped beneath the steel beams of our own rebellion and covered by the debris of our own indifference toward God and we are powerless to extricate ourselves from our predicament. As a result we are in need of someone to come and free us. In listening to these messages you will discover that someone has provided a means of escape and that our ultimate security is found in this Rescuer.
As we trust and follow Him we will have an answer for those who ask, "What in the World is Happening?"
