As Paul concludes 1 Timothy 4, he makes a statement that may shock Protestant sensibilities: “Persist in this, for by so doing, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” There is a real sense in which the faithful pastor “saves” himself and his congregation as he watches over souls. Paul’s counsel to his protégé in 1 Timothy 4 explores the concerns and priorities that will be on a pastor’s heart as he does so.
In this second On Preaching and Pastoring series, Alistair Begg surveys Paul’s instructions to Timothy over the course of a day with a group of pastors gathered at the Truth For Life office, opening up the text of God’s Word to help us see what doctrines and deeds we ought to persist in if we would share in God’s saving work.
