The Apostle Paul sternly addressed those in Galatia who thought they were to submit to the Old Testament Law as opposed to the liberty of salvation through Christ. Alistair Begg explores the allegory of Hagar and Sarah both historically and figuratively, with the lineage of one representing law, and the other representing promise. God has set His focus upon the Church of Jesus Christ, the spiritual descendants and heirs to that promise, and has provided access to Himself through saving work of His Son.
21Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia;5 she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27For it is written,
“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;
break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than those of the one who has a husband.”
28Now you,6 brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
The book of Galatians provides rich material for study on the subject of Christian freedom. Warning against false teachers who attempted to pervert the one true Gospel, Paul confirmed the authority of Scripture and salvation through grace by faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. We have been granted access to God in Christ, and are called to live according to that freedom.
In Volume 1, Alistair Begg helps us to understand the author, audience, and central message of the letter. Through Christ’s atoning sacrifice for our sins, God has fulfilled His promise to Abraham and has given us the power to live as His children. When we unite as believers on the basis of truth, rather than at the expense of it, we can intentionally teach and display the Gospel to a lost and dying world.

In Volume 2, Alistair Begg teaches on the essentials of Christianity as presented by the Apostle Paul. When we recognize Christ as our only hope of salvation, we become a new creation in Him and are free to live accordingly. Transformed by the power of the Gospel, although not free from conflict and trials, our lives will reflect the work God is doing in us as individual believers and as members of the Body of Christ.
