Titus was an elder at a church marked by moral and doctrinal confusion. As his coworker in the faith, Paul wrote to Titus to remind him of the indispensable place of the Gospel and to encourage him to teach it faithfully and to model a way of life consistent with its truth. Paul’s letter offers a picture of the task to which elders are called, and it beautifully and repeatedly grounds the life and lifestyle of the church in the Gospel of grace.
In volume one of this series, Alistair Begg introduces the letter and presents its first exhortation: that Titus would get it right when it comes to preaching the Gospel. His mission was to proclaim the Word faithfully and to raise up other men who could do the same. Qualified elders are men who not only believe and understand the Word but also practice what they preach. Only such leadership will be able to confront false doctrine with godly authority.
